Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

NHS & Private Prescriptions

What is an NHS prescription?

An NHS prescription is issued by an authorised prescriber (such as a GP or Pharmacist Independent Prescriber) on behalf of the NHS.

In England, prescription charges are set nationally by NHS England. You can view current, up-to-date fees directly on the official NHS Prescription Charges Page.

Note: If you live in Scotland or Wales and order online for home delivery from our England-based pharmacy, English NHS prescription charge rules apply.

Who qualifies for free (exempt) NHS prescriptions?

Certain patient groups in England qualify for free NHS prescriptions based on age, medical conditions, maternity status, prepayment certificates, or qualifying benefits.

To check your exact eligibility or verify if your exemption certificate is valid, use the official NHS Prescription Exemption Checker.

We verify exemption status digitally via NHS databases, and the NHS Business Services Authority (NHS BSA) may perform routine spot checks.

What is a private prescription?

A private prescription is issued outside the NHS framework. Payment exemptions do not apply to private prescriptions. Delivery for private orders over £45 is free; orders under £45 incur a standard delivery charge of £3.50.

Ordering & Delivery

How do I order my repeat NHS prescription?

Most GP surgeries require patients to order repeat prescriptions directly. The quickest way to request your medication is online via the NHS App or your GP practice’s online portal, selecting Pharmacyhaus.com as your nominated pharmacy.

Once your GP approves and issues your prescription electronically via the NHS Prescription Service, it is sent straight to our pharmacy team to dispense and dispatch.

If you are housebound, require help to request your prescriptions or need additional assistance managing your orders, please contact our team to discuss pharmacy-assisted support.

How long does delivery take?

  • Repeat Prescriptions: Please allow up to 3 to 5 working days from placing your request to account for GP approval and dispensing. Our online service is not intended for emergency medication needed same-day.
  • Dispatch: Once dispensed, orders are sent via tracked delivery (Royal Mail or specialist courier).

How are temperature-sensitive items and Controlled Drugs delivered?

  • Refrigerated Medicines: Shipped separately via cold-chain validated packaging to ensure temperatures remain between 2°C and 8°C throughout transit.
  • Controlled Drugs: Delivered securely via tracked courier services requiring an adult signature upon delivery.

Clinical Care & Complaints

Can I speak directly to a pharmacist?

Yes. Our clinical team is available for remote consultations, medication reviews, and health advice over the phone (0161 818 8381) or via secure online video link during operating hours (Monday – Friday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM).

How do I report a side effect (Yellow Card Scheme)?

If you experience an unexpected side effect from a medicine, notify our clinical team or your GP. You can also report safety concerns directly to the MHRA via the official NHS Yellow Card Scheme Website.
